I think in 2025, the goal has always been the same. We're a society that does everything for retina, including education, legislation, helps with the business side of retina. One of the things that our members have consistently asked for and wanted is to have a re-emphasis on surgical retinal diseases. We started with a surgical retina summit on Wednesday that was completely packed. We tried to show them new techniques, new instrumentation from the companies of Alcon, ZEISS, Bausch + Lomb and all the new wonderful things that they've learned and then they've crave for. 

We have placed an emphasis on those things, surgeon initiated trials and new developments from which our global community can learn. So there's an overarching goal. This not only extends to surgical retina, but when we come to medical retina, which is an important part of our specialty. We have tried to showcase all the new things in medical retina, gene therapy, intravential treatments. We have tried to minimize subgroup analysis that have been previously presented and offer little to no new Information. But we've tried to take those analyses and try to make them into the extended discussion sections that we have. We have structured each talk to be three minutes long but have allocated an equal amount of time for discussion.It's the discussion that enables us to learn about therapies. Yesterday, Justis Ehler presented the first dataset, and today my partner and I presented the initial findings on the capsular backend plan. So there's lots of new developments. We've also had invited talks. These talks are delivered by some of the world’s leading experts in retina. They will cover topics in ophthalmology, both surgical and medical diseases. So we have tried to combine the best of everything in a comprehensive and engaging way.

One of the core values we embrace at the ASRS is fostering true partnership with our international colleagues. For us, partnership means education—we want to learn from them just as much as we hope they learn from us.This year, the level of international participation has been among the highest in our history. Out of approximately 1,200 registered physicians, about 250 are from outside the United States, which is a remarkable proportion. In total, including families and corporate members, our attendance has reached about 2,500 participants—an all-time record for our society.We are committed to making our meetings globally accessible, collegial, and educational. It is a two-way exchange, and we expect the same spirit of collaboration when we gather in Montreal, Canada, next year. The following year, in 2027, we will return to my hometown of San Francisco.

This year, I modified the format to allow significantly more time for discussion. We implemented a strict three-minute rule for presentations: each talk must conclude within three minutes, at which point the microphone automatically shuts off. Following this, presenters engage in a group discussion, with each having three minutes to comment on their paper. This structure has proven far more valuable, generating thoughtful dialogue and filling the room with highly relevant and important questions. I believe that prioritizing discussion is essential to advancing our field.

We also introduced a new QR code system that, with appropriate permissions, enables attendees to download the complete slide decks in PDF format. This innovation allows participants to access the information directly without spending time taking hundreds of photographs during the talks. It has been extremely well received and represents a practical step forward in how we share knowledge.

In addition, we have adopted several other innovations that I cannot fully detail due to time. Among them are the Surgical Summit, our expanded Surgical Hall, and the Surgical Experience Centers developed in collaboration with industry partners. The hallways are more active than ever, reflecting the strong engagement of our community.

Altogether, these initiatives set a new standard not only for our own meeting but also for other conferences that aim to integrate medical, surgical, and international perspectives.

As we have discussed, ASRS is an international organization. Beyond being a society, we foster collaboration with other professional groups—sharing our work at their meetings and welcoming theirs at ours.For the first time, we convened an international case conference that enabled our international members to demonstrate their expertise. This initiative is one of several approaches we use to highlight their contributions and signifies the beginning of a broader effort we will continue to expand.As society evolves and circumstances change, we will remain adaptive—transforming our organization and deepening our partnership with international members to secure long-term growth and collaboration.
